Week 37 - Happy Day!

How is everyone back in the homeland? This week I have a bit more time to write so maybe I will write something more. This week was busy, busy, busy--that is how it should be though! The time has been flying by; I can't believe I have been here in Rocky Mountain House for 6 weeks already. My comp will be leaving, and actually going back to his old area. That stuff happens when you get a new mission president. He is kinda bummed about it. Who knows, maybe I will go back Barrhead, that would be crazy. He will be able to rekindle with some of those who he was teaching there, pros and cons I suppose. It would be nice to see all sorts of different areas in the mission though. I will be gettin a companion that is Samoan! It will be quite the experience I would say. His name is elder Telluega (not sure on the spelling yet). We will hopefully be able to get the work going even more and be able to get along!

The Belut was something else I tell you! It was quite the experience. They boil it and everything, then it is just served cold. It had the most horrendous texture you could imagine. I almost lost it when I was eating part of it, similar to the yolk of a hard boiled egg in texture, then I got some chunky in there.. (How you feeling?!) haha that was the moment of truth. Kept it down though! I did eat the whole thing, come on I wouldn't commit to something like that and not eat the whole thing! What kinda man would I be then?

This week we did a lot of service, I helped side a house, did a bunch of painting, and laid some wood flooring. I am getting pretty good at this type of stuff. I guess all the years of doing little things around the house with my dad are really starting to pay off!

Things with Alannah are still going really well. She is golden! The lesson this week was all about prophets and we talked a bit more about the Restoration. She is still on date for the 24 of August, so hopefully everything there will continue to move along. It is a joy teaching someone who truly just loves to learn about the gospel and has such great faith to accept certain principles, commandments, or teachings that others struggle with. She definitely leads with her faith knowing that if it is asked, she will do it. Pretty neat!

We started teaching a fellow who the missionaries used to talk to, Joe. He is a cool guy, about the same age as me. We get along nicely which helps. He has soo many questions, so we met him the first time this week, he just had a real heart to heart with us, then we came over a couple days later and he just asked questions. As he would ask, I would turn to the scripture that would answer his question, it was a cool experience. What a blessing it is to have the scriptures in our lives! We never have to worry about being alone! Hopefully things with him will continue to move forward and we can stay consistent with meeting him.

We got a new investigator this last week, young kid named Michael. He moved in with his grandparents and came to them saying he wanted to be baptized! It was pretty cool. We chatted with him this week and his answer of why he wants to be baptized is because he knows it is what he wants to do and he wants to be just like his dad. Good little child! I got thinking, it has helped immensely coming from teaching kids golf, to teaching kids the gospel. There is a certain way you have to approach teaching children, I am grateful I was able to learn that!

I will tell you a really neat experience I had with listening to the spirit this week. We were out visiting a family that lives about 20 minutes out a town. We were supposed to have a lesson, it was actually the first time we were supposed to start teaching Michael, but they had to reschedule when we got there because they were going to this airshow. Well anyways, out near them is a family that the dad is going through some medical issues, so when we drove there I was thinking of them. Once we left the family we had planned to visit I felt the prompting to go visit this other family, just see how they are doing. To be honest, I ignored it, and tried to tell myself that would be weird and probing, but I shook that off and decided that I truly did need to go there. We got there and had a great conversation with the mom and the few kids that were there, they were actually all sick too. We asked if we could help, and she said that they have been looking to get a blessing for her and some of the kids. They are all sick and the dad isn't staying there right now because of his sickness he would get even worse. I was able to give them a priesthood blessing, and I am so grateful that I could do that. I guess I am really starting to see that that authority is there to bless the lives of those around us. It is there to help those that stand in need. Those blessings sometimes are all someone is looking for, and we are capable of doing that for them.

My dad and I have been sharing ideas about trials versus chastisement and how we can tell if we are being faced with a trial to help us learn and grow or if we are being chastised by the Lord.  I think with the chastisement that can come, sometimes it does result because we weren't there to allow the blessings to be partaken of. I believe that we are never chastised to bring us down, that is against His nature; we are always brought low so we can rise higher. We may receive chastisement due to disobedience, but that is simply there to allow us to further grow. It is all still a part of His plan, whether or not we see it that way. I think we often fall into the trap of thinking God is punishing us, and that he is trying to spite us for some reason, I do not think it is so. All throughout scriptures we see that some need to be brought low because they have become prideful, but it was in the end to humble them to turn to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ--never to show a hate or disregard of love towards them. That is what I think at least!!

I hope you are all doing well, and have a great week this week! You are in my thoughts and prayers! I'll tlak to you soon!

Love, Elder McFall

Just me!

This is from the other side, we went on a hike across the valley, it was pretty cool.

Week 36 - Hello people!

For the sake of time I will cut to the chase... okay Alannah! We had a lesson with her this week about tithing and fast offerings. It is a good one because so many people really do struggle with this principle…understandably so. But it is one that truly shows our faith and our love for our Heavenly Father and our devotion to building His kingdom. Well the lesson went well, she was like 10%!?! It was good times. She really understood it though. We had her explain everything back to us and the importance of doing these things so that was good. She was able to be there for church this week, all 3 hours and the potluck after which was sweet! And on top of that we were able to take her to the baptismal font and show her all of those things. So to sum it up, things are going well there!

We had supper and a lesson with Kambo this week. It was good. We read the D&C 76 with him about basically the 3 kingdoms and everything, it went well. He is slowly coming along, I do see the light at the end of the tunnel there. We had a meeting with Neil. It was frustrating. He doesn't think we are Christians? I wanted to shake his brain. Anyways, we are working at that, might need to drop him soon, we will see.

I have another golf analogy for you that relates to what we see as a widespread problem here where people judge the church by its people as opposed to its teachings. We see it so much up here. Just because you are a member of a country club, doesn't mean you are a good golfer... Which is so true! You may have membership in the church, but people often lose focus on what that then means. The church is simply there for the sinner, and for the sick to be made whole. It is not a place for the elect to be gathered and to rejoice in their righteousness. If it were that way, they would all be translated and then we wouldn't have to worry about it anyways!

We had quite the experience this week. Tracting, just knockin doors, open up to this lady who is like okay what do you want from me? Why are you here? If you are here to preach then go away have a nice day! Well I just was like…well we are here for you. We want to see how we can help you. Yes, we have a message, but we want to see what kind of faith you have and see if we can improve your life in any way. Well one thing led to another, before you know it we are in her house. Well, she is the "spiritual type" and let's say we had a moment of silence. Then we help hands in a circle, had some type of prayer, then a group hug. It was easily one of the most strange things I have ever been a part of. But at the end she cried saying how much it meant to her that we were able to do that...sooo who knows.

I will let everyone know, I ate Belut this week! Only difference, mine was from a duck! If you look at a picture you will understand it even better!

Gotta Jet! Sorry people, next week will be better! I love you all!

Week 35 - Okay, this week's email for everyone!

Okay, this week's email for everyone!
I wanna apologize that you all thought I didn't love you anymore last week! I don't know what happened and why the email didn't go through, but this week you get double the reading material! So buckle down!

This week was good, a little more frustrating, but it has truly made me realize that this is the Lord's work more than anything. Reading an Ensign article this morning, something clicked. There are quotes from some General Authorities saying things to the effect of, this is the Lord's work and we need to actually let him be a part of it. Or things like, let the Lord do the heavy lifting; or other phrases of similar effect. It made me realize that as long as I do what I am asked, He will be there; the miracles will pour out upon me, my companionship, and ultimately my area. The area needs it right now! I got thinking about the area and really came to the conclusion that the ward, esp. the leadership isn't behind us too much right now. I know there have been things in the past with other missionaries that kinda caused that, but it seems like the companionships previous to me being here didn't decide to do much about it to get that fixed. This week, I decided that it really did have to change. I have only been here a few weeks, but from the things I hear from some of the ward members I have gotten to know, it isn't working as smoothly up top as we would hope. I am working hard to improve what they see from our end. We need them, as much as they need us. We set up appts with the EQ pres, HP pres, RS president and trying to get things in order. It is a lot of work, but already we have seen improvements after the meeting with the Elders Quorum president talking about things! I think we are onto something!

This week we had a sweet opportunity that came from service. We went through the ward list trying to identify some of the less-active people in the ward whom we might be able to contact and spend some time with. I felt like we should call this Carl fellow, and we did and he said yea we could come over, but we would have to talk to him while he worked on his deck. We offered to help, we went over, helped for a couple hours had a great conversation with him and his wife and went on our merry way thinking life was just dandy! We get to church this Sunday to find that nobody has really been able to talk to him and that the church has almost no contact with him. But the good news is they were so happy we got over there and had that experience!!! Turns out, sometimes it really is just a matter of timing and who is involved. They invited us back over so we are going to try and get there this upcoming week again for a bbq or something.

This week with Kambo was intense I tell ya. The missionaries have been houndin on the Spirit world for the longest time, I have felt like it just wasn't right, but I wasn't sure which direction to really take it yet. We went in there, I had a scripture prepared, Mosiah 15 that was on the atonement, trying to avoid the spirit world topic, it came up, but as we got talking and everything he said something that finally had it click in my head. Basically like, wouldn't it be better in a way if I didn't believe in the spirit world, then I would just have to do everything right on earth. It made me realize and I was like, YES! not to disregard the spirit world or avoid his problem, but it gives us something that will help his testimony even more. We immediately went into the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the steps we must take while here on earth. We are going to be talking about priesthood and the restoration this week. It will be a long process, but I know if he gets a testimony of the restoration, naturally he will have a testimony of Joseph Smith and that means it will be much easier to accept revelation on the spirit world...I'll let you know how it all goes!

We had our lesson with Alannah this week, it was super solid. We taught the importance of baptism, the baptismal covenant, and then sacrament. It surprised me she hadn't been taught the covenant of baptism yet she was committed to baptism. So we did that and she said how much she learned in that lesson, which was so cool! She is still on date for the 24 of August so that is lum.

Anyways, I am not sure if I will be able to get much of an email off next week. I am trying to get it figured out. A member is taking us out to the Colombian ice fields, it will be too cool! I will hopefully talk to you all soon though!

I love you all!

Week 34 - I don't know what happened to my email - Last week's (July 8) email...

Another solid week up here in Rocky Mountain House! I am enjoying my time here. This week was good as we got to see/meet with all 4 of our investigators...okay false I am missing one. We have 5 right now, the other one had to reschedule to this Wednesday!

It got really hot early last week, well it got Utah hot apparently and was up in the 100 degree area for us, which isn't normal at all apparently! It was kinda nice though! It is usually between 55-75 degrees this time of year, well at least for me it has, so getting up there wasn't too bad! Of course, since we went up to Nordegg and Crescent Falls last week (use up our driving miles or “clicks”) we had to spend a couple days walking and biking. What two days? Well the hottest days the Canadians have seen in a while! It was a good time though!

This week we met with Tricia! Someone I haven't mentioned before. She is super nice! We got talking about the Law of Chastity, yes that is a tough one to teach. But we got in there and she drops the bomb of, "I don't believe in marriage" Yikes. We told her well in order to be baptized that kinda has to happen, soooooo... We will see what happens there! We will see where her desires really are! We are hoping to find something in the gospel she just can't resist and will do anything for! We met with Kambo this week too, it was pretty good. We talked a lot about our purpose on earth. He is still caught up on the whole spirit world thing, but we figured if we could paint the whole picture for him then maybe things will begin to click. We definitely said some things that he totally agrees with. It is just getting him to lead with the faith he does have, rather than lead all things with his questions and doubts. We also saw Neil this week, but just cause he said he would get us apple pie for the fourth of July! haha He is a good guy. So I got a mini 4th celebration with that and then some members gave us some ice cream and sparklers! Good times, super wild I tell ya.

We met our new mission president this week, he is so nice and so is his wife! We had great conversation with them. I really do think many great things are in store for this mission while they are at the helm. Life really is good though. I gotta run, my time is about to expire on the computer and we gotta get to supper! I love you all though! Have a great week! I will get all caught up with things I missed. Oh we went to a POWWOW this weekend; that was a sweet experience! I love you all!

Until next week!

Week 33 - Happy Canada Day!

I am writing today because yesterday was the good 'ol Canada Day! Basically just Canada trying to have an awesome American Holiday in July! It was a lot of fun for me though for sure! I'll get into that later on! I'll start with updating you on how things are going up here with the missionary work!  I am loving serving and everything involved there. It really is one of the greatest choices I could have made.

About the Missionary Broadcast. Yes, I watched it! It was awesome! great messages were shared. I love how the work is changing with the times. We have been able to see great reception from any type of media (Mormon.org, Mormon messages, etc.) and I think if we can take that to the next level and use it even more, especially in finding opportunities, we will be able to see the work move forward in so many other ways. I think it has such great potential because a testimony heard obviously has great power, but a testimony read is just the same. If someone can see that and feel the spirit in other ways, It will allow them to have that greater desire. I am excited to see what happens specifically in our mission though.

Things really are so good right now! I say that, even though, things are kinda slow in a way. We had a lesson with Kambo this week again, which was good. We are going over the Plan of Salvation in its entirety with him. He has learned it before, but things haven't been able to click with him. A lot of what gets him is he gets stuck on the Spirit World. We have been working so hard to figure out how to help them. We have been able to identify a couple of points that we do believe are what is keeping him from moving forward from that. We didn't make a ton of progress in our lesson this week, mostly just us writing down his questions so we could study them out at a later time and get back to him. I have found that even though I usually have an answer for some of those bigger questions, it's best to go study it out more, and come back with a much more complete answer. We will meet this week and answer some of his questions. Investigators like that are so tough, but good because they make you learn a lot!
We had two lessons with Neil this week. He is the guy that owns the theater! We have been talking a lot about prophets lately. He has been comparing the latter day church, to the church in Old Testament times. Which can make things a bit confusing in his mind! The way he stated it was that he will need to be convinced that what we are saying is the truth! I know of a couple ways to do that, just trying to figure out the best way. We are really just trying to get him to feel the spirit while reading the Book of Mormon. Another one of those tough situations where they say, "I read and prayed about the Book of Mormon, and I feel it isn't true." Well shoot! It's been tough. I know if we can get him to read it and really look for the truth, really desire the truth, he will be able to see that. I know he will be able to feel of the power that lies within its pages. So much work left to do there!

We had our lesson with Alanna this week too! She is doing well, still progressing, and as of this week now has work off so she can be coming to church each week! She really is so excited about the gospel. She has been flying through the Book of Mormon too. She is new to the whole religion thing, as she never grew up with anything, not really even a bible in the house. With her we have been really trying to help her see that we do have a loving Heavenly Father who helps in all things. That we have a Savior who truly does know how to help us in our individual circumstances. I think it is mostly about helping her see the application of the gospel in her life. She has a good testimony, and if she gets coming to church each week her date might be moved up to early August for her baptism. No need to rush though!
We decided that we should bike around too! The church provided us some bikes to use so we have been using those to cruise around town! I have been using this old 10 speed, skinny tires and all. Well let's just say, I broke it. haha I was pedaling up this hill in a pretty low gear, I was going hard at it, and the bike tire completely torqued and bent like crazy! haha it's hilarious! We were on our way to this appointment with like 4 Pilipinos! It was intense! We got there and they just all started to shout in tagalog, it was too funny! They are a good time to be around! We were there working with a recent convert, Sandra! We are working towards the temple this fall!

Jared! He is the deaf guy! We taught him all about the sacrament and importance of church. It was good! and yes, all done in sign! My sign is coming along. The only sign I am going to know though is going to be church terms! haha The sign language is coming along pretty good though, considering how long I have been doing it. I can have basic conversations in sign. I need to work on it more though. Today we have another lesson with Jared. It is helping me a ton to adapt my teaching to the needs of the individual. I am really beginning to see how I am here to help others truly just come unto Christ. It doesn't matter their "status" (active, less-active, investigator) I am here to do everything I can in my power to help all those around me see our Savior and Heavenly Father's love for them.

We had lots of adventures between last Monday and yesterday! Last week we went to this little waterfall just right outside of town and also crossed this big train bridge. Apparently no other missionary has done that, or at least for a while, so as soon as I heard that I figured we HAD to do it. SO we went and did it! It was awesome! In order to get to the waterfall it was so muddy, so I just went barefoot! Good idea? Not sure! But we made it! Then yesterday was even better! We woke up early and went golfing with two of the members! I Used some old clubs and just went at it! It was a lot of fun to get out and golf again after 8 months! No worries, it hasn't left me too much. Hopefully I will be able to go again soon! After that we had a big bbq with all sorts of people, which was fun. Then since we had nothing left to do, and we had the whole day off, we decided to go to the mountains! We went to a place called Nordegg, then to Abraham Lake, and then to a place called Crescent Falls! I miss the mountains too much! It was fun! I took lots of pictures that I will send after this! I love being able to be out and see more of the area that I serve in. We are supposed to go to the mountains like every Monday for the rest of the month I think too. I am so stoked!

I should probably get headed! After seeing what other missionaries write, maybe I’ll start writing you all less (: I love you all though! Go celebrate the greatest holiday ever this week! I'll talk to you all very soon!
Love, Elder McFall

Week 32 - Bonjour!

That is just about all the French I know so far, I am working on it though! How is everyone doing down there in the beautiful U.S.A? It was for sure weird leaving behind the old area of Barrhead and coming down here to Rocky Mountain House. It was even more weird to see President and Sister Campbell at their last transfer meeting just this last week. It'll be interesting to see what changes with the new mission president's arrival just this week. I definitely have a lot of memories from the Barrhead area, lots of friendships I was able to make, but now we are moving along. Rocky Mountain house is a nice area, I think so at least. It is down in the more southern part of our mission, and actually close to the mountains like I said. I can actually see the mountains from the town! There are only around 3000 more people than Barrhead, but it feels much, much bigger! The ward isn't a ton bigger, but definitely can tell the difference.

The work here is going pretty well I would say. Just recently they got an investigator on date. Her name is Alanna. The date right now is Aug. 24, we can move it up though as she works on getting work off. She said she talked to her managers and they said not this, but next week she should have it off. Hopefully that will follow through. We have another investigator who actually lives out in the woods! It's pretty cool! We went there to go see her and meet her, and let me first say it's like a mile walk on a dirt path, but she wasn't home. Oh well! On the walk back though it just started to pour! It was crazy! Good times though. We went to go visit her the other day, but because all of the rain the river had overflowed all the way up to her place. Which initially is like 75 yards or something away from the edge of the river bank, not just where the water is. We tried to make it just by following game trails through the thick of it, but we ended up just turning back realizing that it was not going to work! We will try again tomorrow! That day we went to go see her though we did see her like live-in partner, Jack. Oh, her name is Mary by the way! And anyways we saw him just sitting down there by the river. So I literally have talked to someone, while sitting next to a bridge, down by the river now!
We have an investigator who is from Africa, his name is Kambo! He is a tough one. He asks some tough questions, but for some reason I love those types. We taught him the one time, and he has the hardest time with the Spirit World. We will be teaching him again tonight, so hopefully we can make some progress. It's been like this same problem for the last year.. we shall see!

One really cool thing since being here is we have this less-active guy is actually deaf. At first when I heard that I was overwhelmed. Like what am I going to do! So you know what I did, I started to learn sign language. I study every morning for like 15 mins before personal study. I can now say basic things, and can say a really basic prayer, along with the alphabet and stuff of course. It is hard, but it seems like the right thing to do! He is a super awesome guy though!
Oh, I have now tried something new again. Mountain Sheep! One of the members up here hunts a ton, and so he fed us some mountain sheep the other day. I told him it is his responsibility to keep me full of wild game now. I also have some bear Jerky that Bro. Swan gave me back up in Barrhead! It's actually pretty good!
Yesterday, my first Sunday was sweet! I got on a good start it seems like in the ward. The rumor about the bishop was he was super hard to befriend, and kinda a quiet guy. But at church and everything he came up to me introduced himself with a big smile on his face, but before that imitated this golf swing! It was hilarious! Apparently word got around before I was here that I love to golf! We had supper with the Bishop and his family yesterday and it was awesome! So maybe we have turned a new leaf there!

Last night we had quite the experience too as we had two suppers. Our ward mission leader and his wife are from the Philippines, they are hilarious! Well, they took us out to their friends place where we had some Pilipino food, It's called panchit! It's basically stirfry, and then like a few other things. We well talked about the gospel and they are super interested and want to come to church next week! So we will see how that goes! The Duran's, our ward mission leader, said they are going to cook me goat in July, along with Belout, which is a half developed chicken fetus..so we will see how that goes!
Life is good though! I am loving it! Today is actually blue skies too! I hope all is well with you! I love you all!

Love, Elder McFall

Welcome to Rocky Mountain House!

President and Sister Campbell at our last transfer meeting! They will be missed!

This is Elder Simmons, actually from Lehi! He is one of my pals up here for sure!

Probably the coolest pumpjack ever. It is right off one of the highways leaving town.

This is actually back up in Barrhead. It's like 20 yards into the bush! We were tracting up in here for like half a day in this subdivision.

Week 31 - Hello one and all!

I can't believe the amount of things that can be done in one week as a missionary! The weeks have honestly just been flying by. It's so much fun though! This week we weren't able to have a ton of lessons with our investigators, which is frustrating and rather sad. However, we still were able to chat with them and have good conversations. I know things will move along eventually with each of them. They will all come to realize that the gospel is what they need, it just takes time though. I feel as though I was able to be a part of their journey for simply planting the seed and getting things in motion, and then time will allow things to progress. We did have one lesson this week with our investigator Maryann. It was so great! It was a super solid lesson all about how the Book of Mormon is essential to us in our conversions and how we need it to find the greatest happiness. We emphasized how it is one of the most crucial points in getting a testimony of the gospel, and how to heed the promptings of the spirit. The Book of Mormon, coupled with an understanding of how the Holy Ghost is working within you, is what makes everything click. She has been able to see Satan working against her and she recognizes what he has been doing to try and dissuade her from further progressing. At the same time she has been seeing how the way is being prepared for her to investigate the gospel! It has been a cool conversion to be a part of!

I was able to have a very neat experience with the Holy Ghost this week. We were having a regular meal and lesson with one of the member families here in the ward last Wednesday. As it goes, we go from supper (dinner) and then we share our message. That morning we had planned this lesson we thought would be super solid and what the family needed to hear. When we sat down to do the lesson, my comp and I both opened to a scripture in D&C 84, where initially our scripture was in Mathew 7. We didn't notice it at the time though. Anyways, we both opened up thinking it was the exact message we had prepared, it was the lesson for them, and neither of us questioned it. We had our message/lesson, and it went so well! It was exactly what they needed. We answered some questions they had about missionary work, gave direction, motivation, the works! It was a super sweet lesson. Now fast forward to that night when we were planning for the next day and talking about our lessons that day. We looked in our planners and realized we shared a completely different message without realizing it! It was so cool! The Holy Ghost is always at work; often times when we don't even realize it! I was so grateful to heed to the prompting that we were able to receive at that time. The Holy Ghost allows us to bless other people's lives more than I think we do realize.

Another awesome experience this week was with a less-active family that really does not come to church, nor plans on it. Well you know, we had a supper with them! It was a great experience! It has been a blessing in this area for me because I've realized I have been able to get friendships with some of the members that missionaries haven't been able to get in for a while. I've been a part of them reopening their lives to the gospel, and I am so grateful for that!

Now I will bear the bittersweet news, I got the transfer call this morning and I will be headed down to Rocky Mountain House! It is in the southern part of our mission, actually over by the mountains too! I am stoked for that! Another outlying smaller area, apparently it's sort of in the middle of nowhere, but I am excited. It's been the greatest blessing to be up here in the Barrhead area. I love the people up here and they have greatly influenced my life. It's the greatest blessing! I have made friendships with some of these people that I will never forget! I will be with Elder Coombs, the same fellow I served with in the tripanionship! It is close to the mountains there too, which is sweet! I will enjoy it I’m sure. It will be tough leaving behind Barrhead, but I feel at peace with the area and feel as though I accomplished what I was here to do, and learned (or as the Canadians say, learnt) what I was supposed to learn!

I hope you all have a wonderful week this week. The scripture in D&C that I mentioned is one you should all look up. It says, "And whose receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up." I hope you can all think about that and realize that when we are in the work of our Lord and spreading the gospel as we are constantly told to do, he has prepared the way. He is there to guide us along the way. It is the greatest blessing we could ever have. He is always there to help us; we need to allow Him to be a part of the work that we are so eagerly endeavoring on.

I love you all! I hope to hear from you all soon!

Love, Elder McFall
