Week 11 - Happy Monday

I hope everyone has had an awesome week! Another solid week up here in Canada, not a ton of new things happening, but definitely some interesting experiences!

I'll start with saying that we were in a play this last week! I failed to mention that before! It was written by a ward member and everything. This play was about Joseph Smith with the whole idea of "To Know the Truth". Definitely not something I ever imagined myself doing while on my mission! It was fun though! We had a good time doing it! I'll send the picture of me in my low-budget costume!

Something else that happened this week! Okay so we have this less-active guy in our ward. He is from Taiwan, he may have just gotten legal to work in Canada, he has been a "tourist" for like 6 months but living here. Anyways! I had a shirt that didn't fit that I brought with me. (I brought a shirt that didn't fit, don't ask me why! Brand new even!!) Anyways, he is extremely poor so I gave it to him. You should have seen the look on his face! The day we went over to give it to him there was a Pig head on the table!!! It was so freaky! I'll send the picture of it! It scared me half to death though when he flipped on the light!

Next story, so we tracted these small towns, well they are called "hamlets" so they are smaller than towns. Anyways while doing that we saw a deer with one antler! I got some sweet pictures of him though! I almost got eaten by a giant St. Bernard! It was one of the biggest dogs i've ever seen! It almost jumped over this like 5 foot fence! We just ran for it...so hopefully they didn't want to get baptized...hmm. Anyway! Also that day we came across "Pibroch Colony". It's a Hoddurite colony. If you don't know what it is, look it up! It was so interesting! They are like Amish/polygamist/weird. I have seen some crazy things up here I tell you!

The work is going great though! Work is progressing nicely. We have seen such an immense change in the ward's attitude towards missionary work, and you can really feel it. We have probably 4 progressing investigators. No baptism date due to them being minors so other things need to be worked out. However, they all have the desire and it should be worked out. They all have become so excited! We have also been working with a lot of less-actives and they are moving along great! Definitely a hard thing as a missionary not to really see all these baptisms, but seeing any person come unto Christ is so rewarding!

It's crazy to think I only have a few more weeks left on the training program. I wonder what will happen in the next transfer! I've learned so much so fast while on my mission. Sometimes it's hard to believe. Missionary work is grueling. I've found that the harder I work though, the easier it actually is. The energy comes from unknown places. They are long days but I have seen as I consecrate myself to the work things truly are made easier. Plus, if you work hard, you are bound to see success. Success is so hard to measure as a missionary, it could be measured in so many different categories. I know this is the place to be though. Being a missionary is amazing. The days where I wonder, "why on earth am I doing this" is usually followed with something that reassures me in my calling. So many of my prayers have been answered. The feelings that come have built my testimony in ways that I could never explain. I thank each of you for the continued love and support. The prayers are felt!

I would suggest each of you to go to "Mormon Messages" and watch the Elder Bednar bit on "The Light of Christ". I love it so much! Definitely answered some of my questions! Then explore the site, we do it every week and I can still find something great on there!

I hope you all have a fantastic week! You are in my prayers! Go have a missionary moment this week!! I'll talk to you soon!

Week 10

Hello Everyone!!

I can't believe it, already Monday again! This week was crazy busy for me! Hopefully all of you have had a great week! Any missionary experiences?! It is weird how as you dedicate your life to the cause of missionary work all other worries seem to diminish and you no longer worry about anything else. All fears melt away as you put all of your trust in the Lord. I am staying warm, I am eating well, health is good (I actually work out mornings & nights), Teaching is progressing--slowly though, and the companionship is good so it is actually really nice out here for now! Well the weather isn't it's freezing, that is okay though!

To update on investigators and such. Okay so the man named Heath that was our "golden contact" yeah, he was super cool and everything, but doesn't think it fits his life right now. Said he will keep our number and when things change he will contact the missionaries. That was a tough pill to swallow; it is hard to not see the immediate success. But we have faith that the seed has been planted and according the Lord's timetable he will want to know more!

No other new investigators this week really..We are moving forward with the 3 kids in the family. She is going to talk to the dad this week about letting them get baptized, so hopefully that goes well! We still have the one baptism that will be in March from the other part member family! We have been staying very busy with our less actives and member families as well! This week I realized how much I care for the area in which I serve. I do everything I can to try and improve every aspect of it. It makes you feel like your time is much more worthwhile as you can see a lot of areas improve. It really is not centered on numbers, we are strengthening the area in every way possible! Tracting this week we had a couple noteworthy moments! One was we tracted down range roads, in -15 degree weather while it was snowing. It was a good time! Nothing came of it, but it was something I always imagined myself doing up here in Canada! Another experience we had was in a small town called Clyde. This lady opens the door, kind of cross-eyed, draggin' on her cigarette. We start talking to her about faith and she goes off how the Holy Father has helped her so much. And how Jesus is going to heal her. Anyways, she keeps going on and on, and when we leave she like blessed us? It was so weird!!

I had a really cool experience this week while down in the city (Edmonton). We had Zone Training Meeting, then a broadcast in the city we had to wait for so we went on mini-exchanges. I went with Elder Batchuluun, he is from Mongolia. We went to this Mongolian family, and had dinner with them. I understood like 20 words in an hour and a half. I think I said the most words when I said the closing prayer? Anyways the lesson taught was the plan of salvation, all in Mongolian. No, I didn't have the gift of tongues, but I had a neat experience nonetheless. Even though I didn't understand a single word, I felt the spirit so strong. It was a powerful experience for me, to know that the spirit truly does testify and is felt in our hearts.

Our mission is growing like crazy over the next year! Our cap has increased we will eventually have 250 with a differential of 20 either way. Next transfer..so like middle of February they will open up 5 areas. That means we will add close to 100 more missionaries to the mission. It will be crazy, and I could easily be bumped up to a role of leadership quickly.

This week I have found myself studying again from the Book of Mormon. I have almost got through the 4 gospels really in the New Testament. I already read the triple combo once. I was reading in the New Testament and I had such a desire to read from the Book of Mormon, so I started it again this week! Hopefully each of you read from the Book of Mormon each day. After all, it is the keystone to our religion, without it our church is nothing! I invite you all to also read in the Doctrine & Covenants. Powerful book, I go back and forth everyday deciding which one I like more! Prayerfully reading from the scriptures is something that I wish I had done long before my mission. There are so many answers to be found. Comfort that I cannot explain. Direction that you cannot question.

Keep looking for missionary opportunities! Don't be afraid to share the gospel with someone because you are afraid of losing a friend. This gospel can help every single person on Earth. The blessings are hard to comprehend, but they will come as we seek them. Thank you all so much for your prayers! They are felt! I hope you all have a great week! Thank you for all that you do! Love you!

Week 9 - Greetings from Barrhead!

Hello to Everyone!
I hope you have all had a very enjoyable week!! I know that I did, but it was a long one this week! We stayed very busy and taught a good number of lessons, which I do enjoy! Being a busy missionary helps out a ton, plus if you are busy you are doing what you should! Makes sense right?

Anyways, for a couple stories from the week. I'll start with this morning! Our car got robbed!!! haha my companion basically is lazy and doesn't lock things, ever. I have to remind him like everyday. Last night I guess I didn't remind him cause this morning when we got to our car we see it had our credit cards from the mission stolen out of the glove box! whoops is right, that wasn't something you want to call the transportation leader about haha oh well it all happens for a reason right? Maybe he will lock things up now!

To update on our investigator named Heath that we tracted into! Okay so we got in touch with him this week, and he had read parts of the restoration pamphlet and liked it. We then talked about Mormon.org and he has already looked into that and liked what he has seen! We couldn’t meet with him like we had planned later in the week cause he had a "hot date" so we will probably meet this week! He is such a cool guy though! I can see him being baptized! Let's hope I'm not too crazy though!

A cool experience with an investigator this week. His name is Adam and he always seems to want proof. He has been talking to the missionaries for like 3-4 years. This week we went in there and guns were a blazing. We just started riflin out the tough questions. We were getting him to really think about what he wants to get from the missionaries! It was cool though because as we taught I thought about a scripture in Ether 12:6 where it talks about you don't have proof until your faith has been tested! His biggest problem is trusting in his feelings from the Holy Ghost. He lacks faith...But we have seen a nice growth and it seems that he now sees what he must do to really figure this one out!

Our other investigator family with the 3 kids that should be baptized is moving along nicely! Hopefully the legal issues are worked out there! They are basically members, they come to everything, just not baptized. It's pretty lame! We are working on it though!

Every week I pray about what I will be able to bring to you all, I guess my "Elder McFall Message" right? And the thought that has come to mind is one that we have been sharing a lot with the families of our ward. We are talking about family mission plans. These plans are basically meant to build both the testimonies of the members of the family within their own homes, but also helping families recognize the missionary opportunities that they can be a part of. Not only that, but we are working with them to seek their own missionary opportunities. So some of the things that families will say are like read together the Book of Mormon, Pray together daily, etc. And for others they will say invite this family to church, missionary lessons, FHE, or other things like that. But the one I would like to emphasize with you all is the concept of service. This encompasses all aspects of missionary work. Inviting others to come unto Christ is the first line of the missionary purpose. This doesn't just mean inviting someone to take the discussions or anything. To build their faith, increase their dependability on the Lord, and trust the Lord for all that they do. To me this would be done through service throughout the community. Do something for someone at all times. It's so easy to get into our own routine and not worry about what is happening to the people around us. However, think of how you could help someone you would never expected. Think that you may be the answer to someone's prayers. Wake up and pray for missionary opportunities, listen closely to the promptings of the Holy Ghost throughout the day, and always act on the promptings you do receive. People are always talking about the joy that a missionary feels. This joy comes from feasting on the words of Christ, Praying Continually, Relying on the things you receive, and looking outward. Each of us can enjoy that happiness; I know that to be true!

I love you all so very much! You are all in my prayers! Your prayers help more than you could ever know! I'll try and do something even cooler this week! Keep up the good work down in the U.S.A!! Don't get too cold! This week is supposed to be warmer up here, I'm stoked! Well warmer is all relative!

I'll talk to you all very soon!

Week 8

Hello!

How is everyone doing!? I hope you all are having a great start to your week this week! I look forward to hearing from each of you each week; it truly is such a source of inspiration. It's nice having things start to slow down again, and our schedule is starting to fill up, which I never thought possible with such a small community! But it's good, the work is progressing! A busy missionary is a happy missionary. But tired. I want a nap!

We had exchanges this last week with the zone leaders, and that was great! It was good to see how another missionary really worked. It's always such a growing experience. I learn about myself so much as I work and I see that I can do hard things. Missions are difficult, but you don't really think about it ever until you lay your head on your pillow at night and just wonder like how on earth did I do that today? Ha it's good though. Not a ton of super exciting stuff from my end this week!

I have now seen my first moose up here, now I've seen 3 and then probably like 15 whitetail deer! It's great! I’ve eaten moose now too, it's also very tasty! Things are picking up a lot, the work is progressing, and I am growing each day.

One cool experience I have is that during tracting this week we knocked on a door to a guy in his 30's probably, and we just started talking and everything and he seems to be interested. Went back a couple days later and he likes what we are talking about, we did leave him a Restoration pamphlet, then this time we left a mormon.org card! We are going back this week; I'll let you know how it goes! Maybe I found someone who has been prepared for me? We shall see!

I'll try and do something exciting for you all this week. Send letters! I love the emails but I hardly ever get actual mail which stinks, but that is how it goes! I love you all, have a great week!

Love, Elder McFall

Week 7 - Happy New Years!

Happy New Year Everyone!
Well the holidays have now wrapped up for the 2012 year and we are embarking on the year of 2013! For me it is slightly bittersweet, as I will be away from my family & loved ones for an entire year. However, what a blessing it is to be serving our Lord and Savior up here in Canada! It is a unique experience that I hope you all can enjoy vicariously through me.

New Years was much different for me, as you might imagine! We did have permission to stay up until 12...but we did have to be in our apartment by 6 pm. I sat in the apartment and really just listened to some MoTab, wrote in my journal quite a bit, wrote letters, ate some food (frozen pizza)..haha it was pretty wild I tell ya. Although it was quiet, it did bring me an opportunity that I often never took advantage of; it gave me the chance to really sit back and think about my year, and ponder about how that year has helped me in my life. I was thinking about how much changed in my life in 2012...Who knows what this year will bring! In 2012 some things I thought of were that I received my patriarchal blessing, graduated high school & seminary, got my mission call, my brother moved to California-and then got married, I turned 19, I am on a mission, and my sister got engaged. First holidays away from home! That is quite the change in life! But we believe in change!  It was a year of change undoubtedly for myself. All summed up with I am now on a mission, whereas a year ago I never did think I would go on a mission. How grateful I am to be here serving. It is not easy, there are hard times, times where I do not know how I will be able to keep doing this, however there is that ray of hope that I continually cling onto. All of which is made easier by my building testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

There is a wonderful talk given in the 2012 April Ensign that I read and found it to be of great inspiration. It talked on how that the Atonement did not only allow the sinner to be healed, but how it enabled the Saint to be perfected-an idea that I have never really thought about. I have never been as close to my Savior as I am now and yet there are days where I still feel so hopeless. Once I read this I realized I was not asking for the right things in my prayers, I was not relying on the Atonement as I should. Immediately I found myself on my knees pleading with our Heavenly Father to not change my situation, but rather give me the strength & knowledge to know how I will accomplish this task at hand. I immediately found peace, joy, and hope within my heart. I do not share this with you all to say that I am some awesome missionary rather to challenge you, to invite you, to study the Atonement of Jesus Christ. To rely upon it for all that you do in your lives. Fully utilize the amazing gift that it truly is.

The work has been slow and I often find myself discouraged that the work isn't progressing faster than it is. I am not used to not succeeding immediately at something I put so much effort into. It's a work in progress. However, this week the work is picking up, and things should be back to normal.

This week we did find some cool stuff though, I guess you could say some of the perks of being in a small town! There is a small bakery that you can get just about anything delicious there for all really cheap! I loved it! The members were so gracious to us this week, just as they have been since I have arrived. You should see the bounty I have from Christmas gifts the members would give us! New Years day a family invited us over for breakfast and to take part in a tradition with their family. We dropped off a shoe and then the elves came and filled it with useful items and treats! The ward up here is very personal, something that is a little different. Everyone likes everyone; they have to since there are not many people at all! ha but it is definitely a cool experience!

Hopefully I will have more to report next week! Until then I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week! I'll talk to you all soon!

Love,
Elder McFall

Week 6 - Christmas

Good day to you all!

First I wish you all a happy holidays! The holidays definitely aren't the same as I am away from home, but nonetheless they are a good experience. But first, I'll tell you about what has been happening lately or anything like that! We have been mostly going through our former investigators, well not ours but former investigators from the area, I call them mine now though! That is mostly where we have found success. It's hard this time of year because everyone is always gone and busy with all sorts of different things, or sick. Basically all of our investigators we haven't been able to meet with in what seems like forever now. But we have been able to find a few of the formers who actually want to be taught again! One thing we do is we will shovel their walks and then go and talk to them. Simple acts of service can truly open doors for people. But a lot of it goes back to missionaries not staying diligent in the work and how important that is. I was actually studying that attribute this morning and it hit me. Diligence and obedience are two things on a mission that are so crucial to your success. To always keep pressing forward, no matter how tough the situation may seem. And then as you do that, you must stay obedient to remain worthy to have the spirit with you. The spirit truly is the converter-easily the greatest tool we are given as a missionary. Another cool experience we had was at dinner one night in a restaurant. We were sitting there with a member. (Brother Bill, who is one of the greatest guys ever) and anyways, an older couple overheard us and just jumped right into our conversation. Family history was the main topic at first, but then they of course get onto the topic of "why on earth are two young men dressed up and up here in Canada" which we get quite frequently still. But we had the amazing opportunity of teaching them of our purpose and why we love the gospel so much. It was powerful, which is funny cause we were in the middle of a restaurant! ha but I remember the lady actually said, "well I think I really like your church!" She doesn't live in our area but we gave her a pass a long and told her to contact the missionaries where she lives, hopefully she does do that! Something else that happened this last week was that we had a guy who seemed fairly open to meeting, but upon meeting he actually just wanted to refer us to his brother, but at the same time we kept talking and eventually he asked us basically what is the greatest thing your parents have done for you? My response was something that I hadn't really thought of before. To put it into one word, I explained it as, 'opportunity'. Not everyone gets the opportunity to grow up in a loving home, where the home and family is centered in the gospel. And with that, no matter what decision I made, I always had parents who stuck by me and continually would invite me to make the decisions according to the teachings of the gospel. They did this through their example. An example that comes by living the gospel. What a blessing that is!!

Christmas was definitely a different experience this year! Christmas Eve we basically spent with a family and my companion and I were taught to crotchet, were I did make a tie! It's pretty cool! the things you learn in Canada right?! hah then Christmas came along and it was good, just not really what I had expected. Christmas is supposed to be spent with family. At the end of the day that is all I was longing for. We spent time with members and they warmly welcomed us into their homes, which was fantastic! We even got presents! I would easily say though the highlight of my day was being able to Skype home, and talking with my loved ones. I wish I could have talked to em forever! There is something special about actually hearing someone's voice. I truly can feel the love from everyone back at home, and it is greatly appreciated. I can't tell you how many times I get down onto my knees during the day and ask for strength to keep pushing forward, to give me the feeling that I can do this. I have always been a positive person, and I believe that is helping me immensely out on the mission. Things are tough, but I know this is where I need to be! Without a doubt I do know that. I am grateful for the family and loved ones that I do have back at home, you all mean the world to me. I hope you continually strengthen your testimony; you never know when someone is going to call upon you and want to know more. This gospel blesses lives more than I can explain, and that is starting with my own. Thank you everyone for getting me to this point in my life, hopefully now I can strengthen you as much as you have me.

A few things about Canada. I miss good bbq food, I like can't get it up here and it kills me! Mark Goodwood down as a must go in two years!! Haha. Under Armor is a life saver! I love it so much. Seriously though, I think yesterday I had on like 6 layers? haha I hate the cold... You know that though. Nobody really runs dogsleds up here, which is lame. They might in parts, but none that I know of yet! It's definitely different up here, but very great nonetheless!

Have a happy holiday and a very happy new year! Make goals that aren't just temporal this year, make goals of spirituality. I have found great joy in the scriptures. Read them, study them, love them. They are truly a roadmap of how to live your life. I'll talk to you all very soon! You all remain in my prayers daily.

Week 5

Hello everyone and all!
It was a good week up North! Definitely getting in the swing of things while up here. Already halfway through my first transfer, which is weird! The days are slow, but weeks are gettin faster and faster! which is weird to say that already. Some days I am convinced that my mission won't end! haha It seems like such a long ways away, but I am enjoying it for sure!
This week we had Christmas Conference! It was awesome, basically it was a morning full of "trainings". President Campbell talked about a few different things but one that really stuck out to me was he talked about how we always pray to know have the spirit with us, but are we doing everything we can to actually allow the spirit into our lives? Basically are we qualifying ourselves? I thought that was a very interesting point! Then we had a nice turkey dinner, and then a talent show! My district performed a little song, basically a jingle bells parody, it was pretty good! I've definitely learned how to have a good time while on the mission, I couldn't really help it though! It's just my personality, but at the same time we work hard! It's weird cause some days it feels like maybe I am the trainer? Ha my comp has days where he is super "burnt" which basically means he doesn't wanna do anything! In the mornings he doesn't like to study, I've learned how to be a good example though and just study away and try and do everything I can! I don't waste any time while on the mission, because I have so much more to learn, and the times to study are never enough!
Another good thing this week was we had Blitzes. Basically the other missionaries in our District come up and we work in our area for the day. While doing that I taught with Elder Gold (He is from Centerville) and during that I actually invited my first person to be baptized! It wasn't like a "woah!" moment, basically just felt like a missionary! ha But it's pretty good to see how I am really learning how to teach so much better! Well really I am learning more doctrine and everything so really I just know  more stuff to teach now! One thing that has been useful though is that I realized that although I may not know a ton, or may not have known a ton coming into this, that allowed me to really jump into everything wanting to learn. Also with that it made me realize how important those things are that I am learning. With all that in mind though, I have come to know how powerful testimony is. I may not know everything, and probably never will, but I have a testimony of the things I do know to be true. And because of the things I have gone through I am able to teach from the heart, and that is more powerful than remembered words!
It was too weird this week though, I'm tellin you Canada is getting more weird as the days go on. I saw a Zamboni driving down the street. It blew my mind. There are seriously hockey rinks everywhere, which is weird too! I am still getting used to this whole kilometers and celcius thing, I am stubborn though. I kinda just ball park it and call it good. It just gets cold, and who cares what the temperature is, right!?
The work is going pretty good though. We found a new investigator this last week which was awesome! Most we find are formers and haven't been taught forever, so it works out for us! Tracting really is not successful up here, we still do it though! We got one Less active family back to church, and an investigator family of kids( her mom is a less active, and due to legal causes can't be baptized yet), so we had 12 new people at Church this last week! Speaking of church though, being such a small town, we had a potluck after church on sunday! it was awesome! haha people just love getting together up here!
I am having fun, sometimes probably too much fun for a missionary! I can't help it though! haha and the time is going by faster and faster already! I feel good about what is happening, but continue to keep me in your prayers! They are felt, and when the times are hard, I can feel the love from everyone back at home! Have a wonderful Christmas season! I love you all very much! Remember to always give all that you can to the others that are less fortunate! We are all very blessed!
Love,
Elder McFall

Additional excerpts from family letter
It's true about the family stuff (Proclamation to the Family), and yea it has been nice to be able to have all the resources we do have! The things we have are definitely for our time on the earth right now! Modern day revelation is the best! I will share more but I will have like my first baptism sorta! Basically the girl is gonna wait til March for her cousin, but yea so that will be awesome! This same family we have basically reactivated and between our investigators last Sunday we had 12 more people back at church that are either less actives or investigators! I won't lie, it's been tough some days. I really do miss home, but it's a good type of miss. I can feel your prayers. I read my patriarchal blessing quite frequently, and what a blessing that is. The scriptures are something I have found a lot of joy in thus far, I will probably finish the Book of Mormon again later this week, and I have found that this time as I have really studied it and wanted to know more, I have retained so much  more than before! It's cool to see how things start to jump out to you and principles are repeated just like telling you in your face how important they are! The teaching has been pretty good. Our numbers are pretty good also. We found one new investigator last week, which was really cool. We don't have a lot of times where it feels like we just teach lessons, definitely a lot of finding! But the biggest thing I've found is to be myself as I teach. It's nice because of how I love to talk to people, it helps tremendously. And as I have seen my knowledge continue to grow, I can teach people in a much different way than I am used to!

I am getting the hang of this mission thing for sure! I can't believe I have been in Canada 3 weeks already! What a trip!  It's nice though, I am enjoying it! I have a lot of fun too, which helps! I make my companion laugh, and the members laugh all the time! Hopefully not to the point where they think I am ridiculous, I think that is just kinda my tool to win people over haha it's good because that really is who I am! I am serious when I teach, but the serious me is not the serious of other people! I feel good about it though! Trust is such a big thing with 'gators that you really do have to be yourself!

Something else as I have grown so much with my testimony and everything is how I look forward to eternal families, and with that I mean being sealed to my future wife and family.  I don't even know how to explain how much that brings joy to my life. It's incredible! Something I was thinking about is how I have come such a far way along. Looking back at where I was a year ago almost blows my mind. The atonement is easily the most incredible gift that we could ever receive. And during this Christmas season I was thinking about that. How I always wanted the nice things, how I always seemed to have those nice things. But yet the thing that has brought me the most joy is the Atonement. I have seen already on my mission how I have begun to more fully utilize the atonement. I have seen how my mission already has blessed my life more than I could put into words. Already to feel the way I do about this gospel, to want to share this with everyone I meet; and really to let other people see the joy of the gospel of Jesus Christ in their lives is something I never have wanted before. It is truly amazing. I find myself sometimes dumbfounded at the Love our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for each and every one of us. Cherish that.
